The cheers were deafening in the Workpoint Channel 23 studio on the weekend when Khon Kaen farmer Peerapol “O” Sakultarn was named the winner of the fifth season of TV talent show “Mic Thongkham” (“Golden Microphone”).

O squeaked past Wipawee “Bam” Bunpa to the finish line.
“My dream has now come true,” he said, holding a trophy and collecting Bt1 million in cash, a Mitsubishi Triton pickup and a music contract with Yoongkao Records.
“The first thing I need to do is pay off my debts, and then I can focus on doing my best every day. Thank you to my beautiful family and to everyone who supported me.”
Two Yoongkao recording artists performed during the proceedings. Ruammit “Joi” Kongchatree, who won at the end of the debut season “Mic Thongkham”, sang his new song “Ror Sao Thi Bor Khor Sor”. And Pratchayaluk “Poppy” Chotwuttinun, last year’s winner, sang her chart-topping hit “Khor Thod Thi Hai Ror”.
After that the four finalists had one last chance to strut their talent, singing compositions specially penned for them.
Sunida “Oil” Numjan sang “Lerk Rak Mai Lerk Luem”, written by Note Chernyim. Sasitorn “Beam” Pansawat got the audience dancing with “Sod Muea Rai Khoi Line Ma” by Nom Chompoo. Bam displayed a powerful voice with Somchai Trupimai’s “Yang Jeb Jid Jid Wela Khid Thueng”.
But it was O who won over the judges and the viewers with “Khor Kod Hai Hai Nueay”, written by Jakra Muangsaked.
Each contestant’s cheering squad waited excitedly until host Pan Plutaek announced the results: Oil as third runner-up, Beam second – then a long suspenseful wait – and finally the coronation of O as the winner. By way of consolation, all three runners-up also received record deals.
And all four will perform together again, along with other Yoongkao artists, at the Mic Thongkham concert at Workpoint Studio on Saturday (March 11). You can reserve seats for the free show at (02) 833 2000 or (02) 833 2347.
The new season of Mic Thongkham begins on March 18, with broadcasts on Workpoint Channel 23 every Saturday and Sunday at 6.20pm.
