Trust me: super-food is snake oil

Re: “Fake data doesn’t help our health”, Letters, yesterday.

I am frustrated with dietary recommendations coming from nutritional charlatans who treat people like a herd of water buffaloes.
First we heard that eggs were good, then they were bad, and now they are good again. I heard fat was bad, now they say it’s good. I’ve been told to avoid fat and meat and focus on grains; now they say that’s why we are obese. Shellfish and offal once vilified for their cholesterol content are okay now, after scientific evidence showed a very weak link between dietary cholesterol and cholesterol levels in the blood.
And, ta-dah, the latest trend, turmeric has now been declared the mightiest super-food of them all. It is a potent anti-inflammatory, loaded with essential vitamins. It improves cognitive function, blood sugar balance, kidney and liver function, as well as reducing cancer risk and growing hair on the chest. (I made up the last one for dramatic effect.)
I predict that it won’t be long before these quacks tell us that curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric, can cause baldness and impotence.
