The sorry saga of Tarit Pengdith
Re: “Ex-DSI chief Tarit sacked for being ‘unusually rich’”, National, April 25.
In 2001, Tarit Pengdith was involved in the drafting of a new law for the establishment of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) under the Ministry of Justice, at the order of the then-Thaksin Shinawatra government.
Tarit became deputy director of that agency in 2002.
In 2009, he was appointed DSI chief by the Democrat-led government under Abhisit Vejjajiva. He was instrumental in speeding up the legal action against pro-Thaksin red-shirt protesters in 2010.
In 2011, when Thaksin’s sister Yingluck became prime minister, Tarit retained his position as chief of the DSI.
During that time, Tarit made an about-face and took action against those who were linked with the former Democrat Party’s administration, and dropped charges against the red-shirt protesters in Thaksin’s camp altogether.
Today, Tarit’s impact on Thai politics is rarely mentioned in the media.
This is another sad story that shows “fairness” belongs only to those who come to power!
