Rajevac won’t decide on captain in a hurry

New Thailand football team coach Milovan Rajevac failed to affirm that long-serving captain Theerathon Bunmathan would retain his armband as he announced a 35-man squad for the away friendly against Uzbekistan and a World Cup qualifier against UAE at home next month.

The experienced Serbian made a major overhaul of the Thai side languishing 129th spot in the world rankings by including 20 players that were not on the list of his predecessor Kiatisak Senamuang’s squad.

Rajevac has not given any assurance on whether the 27-year-old left-back would retain his captaincy. “It’s too early to say whether there would be a change in captaincy or not. Of course, we’ll have a pecking order but I need to know my players more before making a decision.”

Asked whether Theerathon’s involvement in a post-game incident when his club Muangthong United suffered a shock 3-2 loss at home to promoted Ubon UMT United on Saturday would have any influence on his decision, the 63-year-old said: “What’s gone is gone. First of all, I would like to know more about my players and talk with them first.

“It’s too early to say whether Theerathon is suitable to be the team’s captain,” said the coach.

Thai-Swiss midfielder Charyl Chappuis and Kroekrit Thawikan, who were regularly called up by Kiatisak, were left out.
