Beyond ‘theory’: Lusitania sunk for carrying munitions

Re: “Conspiracy theorist torpedoed by facts of WWII history”, Have Your Say, August 23.

Ignorance and lack of knowledge are the downfall of civilisation! The truth resides in researched and proven facts. All else is hypothetical, false, a lie.
Germany very strictly adhered to the conventions of warfare during much of World War II. Of course, the Germans had known for quite some time that the Lusitania, being the world’s fastest passenger liner, was transporting on each trip considerable quantities of ammunition. The manifests were the proof of that pudding.
The German embassy had warned the ship’s owner, Cunard, and its passengers of the risks by travelling on this liner, but to no avail.
On June 3, 1915, the New York Times ran a story of the German ambassador’s visit with President Wilson, at which he submitted the manifest of the Lusitania, proving beyond doubt it was carrying war material (http://www.lusitania.net/deadlycargo.htm). It is so easy to blame the Germans for all the evil.
