Man up! One man’s drivel is another man’s wisdom

What Robin Grant provided (Have Your Say, August 27) is largely sensible and truthful, as is usually the case with this participant.

However it is noted that JC Wilcox, a central actor in his thoughts, has to bear some responsibility for the moral outrage his far-right, Islamophobic views, inter alia, provoke, and of which he is well aware.
I doubt very much, however, if the “emotion-driven drivel and insults” resonate very much with too many readers. Using the word “drivel” in this context is, in itself, an “emotion-driven” insult, and highly subjective on Wilcox’s part.
I for one, as a contributor who is doubtless factored into the perspective in question, am on the record as explicitly stating that if, or when, Wilcox writes something that is not evidently designed to be offensive and controversial, I will support him. Until then he should man up and accept the brickbats. If you’re going to engage with muscular polemics, don’t be surprised when others return the compliment. It goes with the territory.
Besides, what Mr Wilcox – correctly described by Mr Grant as someone who “apparently regards himself as having a superior intellect” – and the rest of us must come to terms with is editorial discretion. These presumed arbiters of Have Your Say content make a decision if a letter is fit for publication or not. We all have to live with that and if you’re not prepared to trade admissible literary pokes at times, don’t contribute. It’s hardly neurosurgery.
