Why breast is best

Why breast is best

Pigeon, a market leader in products for mothers and children, was recently joined by 1,018 mothers in marking the third edition of “Thailand Breastfeeding Day By Pigeon”.

Among the mums who turned out to share their experiences and encourage other mothers to breastfeed were Pornchita Na Songkhla, Ornanong Panyawong, and Cholthicha Sappaiboon.

Suwanna Chokdee-anand, chief executive of Moong Pattana International, which produces Pigeon, was delighted at the turn out. “Over the past two years, our campaign has been well-received by breastfeeding mothers, and in those two years, more than 1,200 mothers and children have joined us. We are very proud to see Thai society paying more attention to breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is nothing new, but it is something we want to keep encouraging.”

Dr Patcharin Amornvipas, a paediatrician with specialisations in gastroenterology and hepatology from Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, stressed that nothing can replace breast milk. “Exclusive breast feeding in the first six months of a child’s life ensures that both the child and the mother benefit. Breast milk is highly nutritious and boosts the child’s immune system. While breastfeeding, the mother and child develop a bond, learn to understand each other. The child feels safe and protected, which helps with the child’s emotions and social skills in the future. For mothers, breastfeed can help reduce the risk for breast cancer by six per cent.”

New mother Pornchita said: “I always intended to breastfeed my child. I love holding my baby in my arms – it brings me so much joy. In the beginning I did not know how to breastfeed properly, but I kept trying. I also try to eat healthy food to ensure I have enough milk for my child. I am sure every mother is proud to breastfeed, and I want to send my support to them mothers.”

The highlight of the event was a mass breastfeeding to break the record, both on site and online through Facebook for a period of three minutes. It was successful to with 1,018 mothers and children breaking the Thai record.
