Thanks to Prayut and his tight grip, Thailand now has a brighter opportunity for democracy than other non-democratic countries. If those who scammed democracy had been left in power, what could we expect, Mr Brown? And look, the dictatorial convicted fugitive is now back pulling the strings.
Democracy has a hard time elsewhere too. The 50 million citizens on food stamps in the US should of course have enough political power to change their miserable lives, but they don’t. Maybe real democracy had better chances to evolve a century ago when possibilities for interference were less. Was that the one-time chance for democracy that will never come back?
We Scandinavians got lucky in having honest people at our early stages of development, and soon our democracies gained power and the will of the majority started showing results. Workers were educated and organised by union and socialist party members. No elite nor antagonistic media were around to derail their mission, and the Scandinavian countries evolved step by step to become among the most even, equal and democratic societies. (Though the toxic influence of the Thatcher-Reagan era did take a toll.)
What chances for a true democracy do poor and low-wage people – the majority – have today in Thailand and other non-democratic countries where power and wealth are in the hands of the few and are controlled by corporations and the richest families? Even the BBC, which is funded by the masses, does not reflect the people’s concerns or case. It’s even worse in Thailand, where hijacking “democracy” is the most profitable business concept – a concept proven by Thaksin.
Prospects are now bleak for democracy in many countries due to corruption, incredible wealth concentration and the elite’s control and ownership of media. A strong Prayut is making a difference. If, in the coming year, he is able to control the destructive interference and manipulation from those with money and also manage to ban corrupt and convicted politicians from political positions forever, a democracy here could still evolve.
