Noisy Nan no escape from bustling Bangkok

We decided to spend a few weeks in the countryside of Phu Phiang in the northern province of Nan just to escape the hustle and bustle of Bangkok.

What a mistake! Instead of the calm and peace of the countryside, every evening we suffered from the thumping boom of house parties, village feasts and temple festivals.
We endured many sleepless nights, and when eventually we could take it no more, we called on the local Tourist Police for their kind intervention – to no avail. When we called them a second time, we were made to feel that we were the problem rather than the nightly noise!
I understand from a couple of other tourists that we are certainly not the only victims of these ongoing disturbances.
I have now returned to bustling Bangkok, to the calm and serenity of our downtown Sathorn hotel, with such relief. Tourists with a wish to retreat upcountry should be warned: Nan is not what you expect it to be while reading the brochures.
