Southern violence baffling, but there is a solution
I was very surprised yesterday to see my name cited in relation to a suggestion that Thailand’s Southern conflict bears all the hallmarks of Islamic insurgency.
Most of my concerns deal with corruption and what I believe to be the military’s misplaced ventures into politics; I have never written about the South or about religion.
Living in the far North I know relatively little about the multitude of problems involved in this area, and I read about atrocities and murder of apparently innocent victims with horror. I have no understanding of why teachers are targeted, I remain baffled as to why Muslims would kill fellow Muslims and have great respect for the people in uniform doing jobs I wouldn’t volunteer for.
My suggestions would always be to bring in the people that do know, get everyone involved in the discussions and find a peaceful solution that works for the majority of Southerners who have suffered so long.
