Il Duce failed in train punctuality

Il Duce failed in train punctuality

Re: “At least Mussolini kept the trains running on time,” Have Your Say, June 28.

Another fascist myth, I’m afraid. Contemporary visitors and journalists were unanimous that they’d rather walk, so to speak.
Mussolini was always late when he visited Hitler by train. The rail links through the Alps were so badly in need of repair that Italy was unable to transport much-needed coal from Germany.
Where the Duce did score a first was in his building of the autostrada between Milan and Varese in 1924. This was the only high-speed toll road at the time and was the model for the US interstate highways we know today.
