Free healthcare is a fundamental human right
I don’t claim to be an economist or to know what the best healthcare plan would look like. What I do know is the true story of a woman in the 1980s who died in Hawaii because the state would not give her the funds she needed for the operation to save her life, which would have had a 70 per cent chance of success.
She needed about $200,000 for the operation and I contributed $200 to the fund to raise that money. If every “right to life” hypocrite – some who are tremendously wealthier than I am – had contributed one dollar to the fund we could have easily raised the $200,000. But it didn’t happen.
Shortly before she died she sent me a letter thanking me for my contribution. Yet all I could feel was shame for not having contributed more.
So let the right-wingers on Fox News scream all they want about “socialism”. But any system that would let that woman needlessly die is rotten and evil to the core.
