Times they are a changin’: America first will soon be America last
Re: “In this century of upheaval, we can feel the balance of power shifting to Asia”, Opinion, yesterday.
What an opportune time it is for Western countries to start recognising the fact that the balance of power is shifting from the Western Hemisphere to the East. And this trend is irreversible now.
European and Asian countries should commence closer economic cooperation and conclude trade pacts as soon as possible.
Europe will find that Asia, China included, has huge potential as a market. Meanwhile Asia can start relying more on the European market than the US so as to secure an uninterrupted flow of trade.
Following the current US government’s adoption of an anti-free trade policy, America will become more and more irrelevant to Asia.
Hence, President Donald Trump’s policy of “America First” and “America only” will likely turn his country into “Lonely America” – and in the very near future.
