The world wants a Palestinian state

Re: "The Jewish state is a fact of life", Letters October 4.

Lord of Ballinaboy declares that what Mr Bullinger thinks about a Jewish state is irrelevant. His reasoning rests on great powers like the US and the UK having determined that there would be a Jewish home in Palestine.
Of course, if these two states had acted in the name of democracy, there would be less controversy. But they did not, either at home or abroad. Take for example the UK. At the time of the Balfour Declaration in 1917, 40 per cent of UK adult males were not allowed to vote, never mind women. It is not surprising then to find this particular power, run by elites, carving up the world to its fancy.
As for the US, it made sure that the rules of global governance set down in 1945, and exercised through the UN Security Council, gave it almost untrammeled power to recreate the world in its own image. This has come at a cost to the rest of the world of between 10-20 million people dead.
The Arab Spring is a signal that Anglo-American influence over the Middle East is drawing to a close, and not a moment too soon. That has profound significance for the bully-boy state of Israel.
Rather than being irrelevant, Mr Bullinger’s views reflect the increasing desire of ordinary citizens everywhere to see justice for the Palestinians. That will eventually be reflected in the exercise of democratic power on their behalf.
