The latest addition to Bangkok’s array of popular rooftop bars has the seemingly dangerous name Leapfrog, but vertigo is not a problem at this modern, friendly and chic spot on Sukhumvit Road Soi 10.
It’s at the summit of the new Ramada Encore Bangkok and, suitably enough for its lofty perch, looks like a loft, with lots of wood and minimal, contemporary decor.
The low tables and sofas are ideal for lounging over drinks and snacks and dinner is served at regulation-height tables.
Or you can eat by the pool outside, catch some breeze and enjoy the skyline sunset. If it rains there’s a massive retractable tarp. Once you’ve had enough fresh air and winking city lights, move back inside and get a groove on with the DJ’s encouragement.
Rooftop bars tend to have prices that match their altitude, but the bill at Leapfrog comes with no such bitter aftertaste. The drinks and food are quite reasonably priced.
Tapas – both traditional and twist-ending style – start at Bt140. A hefty portion of fish & chips is only Bt250. The main dishes can be had from Bt350.
Wine lovers can get a bottle of red, white or bubbly from anywhere in the world for less than Bt1,000 net. Local beer costs Bt150 per small bottle and imported brew is Bt250. Serious drinkers get free ice and mix with their bottles of liquor.
But you have to try the funky cocktails, the “Frog’s Prints”. A large one, “L” is big enough for two people and costs Bt320 net. An XL for three or more is Bt550, and an XXL for up to five tipplers is Bt999.
For a strong, fruity blast, order a Suspicion – rum and mango juice garnished with red chillies – or a Honey Bunny – vodka, mixed berries and Parfait d’Amour. The creamy Toblerone is for the sweet-of-tooth, with Frangelico, Kahlua and chocolate chips. And standard cocktails in standard glasses are Bt200.
