Beats by the boatload

Bangkok hosts three massive music acts next Thursday. Staying home is not an option.

Bangkok party animals will just have to tough it through the rather dull weekend coming up, knowing that their patience will be rewarded next Thursday. That’s when – not one, not two, but – three major, not-to-be-missed acts descend on three different venues at the same time.

It never rains but it pours. You’re rich, though, so deal with it. Make a decision.

Will it be the Cuban Brothers, Naohito Uchiyama or Groove Armada?

Champion Sound is installing the Cuban Brothers at Bed Supperclub on Sukhumvit Soi 11. They’re back by popular demand following an immensely successful show just over a year ago.
Those who missed it get another chance to enjoy the Havana trio’s incredible array of song, dance and comedy, all thrown together with slick B-boy style. The Cuban Brothers are Miguel Mantovani, Archerio Mantovani (they’re the brothers) and Kengo Sanaka. Their music evolves with every show, their riotous comedy is both physical and observational, and their dancing is so high-energy that it’s sensational.
And now they’ve got a full back-up band too, probably because they’ve been touring extensively and appearing at the big events like Bestival, Glastonbury, Rockness and Snowbombing. They’ve even been booked for private parties for the likes of Elton John, Robbie Williams and millionaire visual artist Damien Hirst.
This time in Bangkok they’ll have Tech-12 warming up.

Go to Champion Sound’s Facebook page and promise to attend and you’ll get in and get two drinks for Bt600. Find out more at (02) 651 3537 and www.BedSupperclub.com.
A few doors down Soi 11 at Q Bar, Japanese DJ and producer Naohito Uchiyama will make his Thai debut at roughly the same hour.
The veteran of the Sapporo underground scene is best known for his first full-length album, 2002’s “Directions”. A six-year hiatus followed, but Uchiyama is ready to rock again. He’s working his magic on dance floors at top clubs all over the world.
Admission with two drinks is Bt500 and you’d better dress nice. Get the details at (02) 252 3274 and www.QBarBangkok.com.

Meanwhile on the other side of town, British dance duo Groove Armada will light up LED on RCA on Thursday night. AG Productions and Retox Sessions have set up their first Bangkok gig, and it starts at 9pm.
One of the planet’s best-known and biggest-selling DJ dance acts, Groove Armada is Tom Findlay and Andy Cato, who borrowed the name of a 1970s discotheque. You might not own their albums “Northern Star” from 1998 and the following year’s “Vertigo”, but you’ve certainly heard tracks from 2001’s “Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)”. There was a certain Grammy-nominated single called “Superstylin”.
The Armada sails on, getting more upbeat and even more club-friendly with hits like “I See You Baby”, “If Everybody Looked the Same” and “Song for Mutya (Out of Control)”, featuring the vocals of ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena.
You can buy a Bt900 pass at the door or in advance via www.ThaiTicketMajor.com or (02) 262 3456. The bar will be open from 9.30 to 10.30. After that you get a drink on the house.
