Nothing to get overwrought about

Re: "Opeing ceremony was self-glorification", Letters, July 30.

Horst Bullinger is not alone in finding something to carp about in the spectacular opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games, but suggesting it was self-glorification of Britain is, in my opinion, way off the mark. It seemed to me to be just a colourful, light-hearted but not entirely effective depiction of recent British history and social changes. The theme music from the 1950s film of the audacious RAF wartime “dam-busters” raid has iconic status in Britain, and I think its inclusion in the ceremony was entirely justified, although I must admit I missed it.
However, I doubt if anyone who did hear it immediately turned their thoughts back to the Second World War, except, seemingly, Mr Bullinger.
