Movie-goers around the world know Paris after watching “Paris, I Love You”, and now Russian filmmakers show off their big city with “Moscow, I Love You!”
Made in 2010, “Moscow, I Love You!” is an omnibus of 18 segments by Russian directors who capture the lives and loves in their capital city. It’s part of Russian Film Week, which opens to the public today at SF World Cinema at CentralWorld.
Last night, there was an gala screening of “Moscow, I Love You!”, with Russian actor Gleb Metveichuk entertaining film lovers by singing beautiful Russian songs. Joining him were Russian Ambassador Alexsander Mareeyas, Sergey Lazaruk of Russia’s Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography and director Alexander Kott, whose World War II drama “The Brest Fortress” is part of the festival.
Running through November 9, the festival features five recent Russian films in various genres.
Kott’s “The Brest Fortress”, aka “Fortress of War”, recounts the heroic defence by Soviet troops who came under surprise attack during the first wave of the invasion by the German army on June 22, 1941.
From last year, the romantic comedy “Lucky Trouble” stars Ukrainian-born Hollywood starlet Milla Jovovich. She’s the love interest for a small-town schoolteacher (Russian leading man Konstantin Khabenskiy from “Night Watch”). Complications ensue as they prepare to get married, even though she’s already engaged to another man.
Another omnibus film is “Mamy” (“Mother”), a look at how eight Russian families from different walks of life communicate with their mothers. It was made to mark the March 8 International Women’s Day.
And there’s “My Boyfriend-Angel” (2012), a comedy about an urban Russian woman and her relationship with a boyfriend who is an angel.
