I agree with Somsak Pola that the draft-dodging case against Abihsit Vejjajiva by Defence Minister Sukampol Suwannathat was not necessary. It may even be self-defeating. The order to expel opposition leader Abhisit from the Army was signed by Sukampol. It was issued on the day it was known that Sukampol was among the ministers to be censured by the opposition in Parliament later this month.
This looks very much like personality smearing: some big shots in Pheu Thai have come down on Abhisit like a pack of wolves at the scent of blood.
Anyway, I think this will only serve to strengthen the opposition’s claims that corruption and influence-peddling are rampant in and behind the Yingluck government.
Minister Sukampol should be reminded that if any one of the three independent bodies – the Constitution Court, the Administrative Court or the National Counter Corruption Commission – reaches an opinion against this action of his, he and the government will be in deep trouble.
The result could be constitutional proceedings that might result in the demise of this government and a series of lawsuits against Sukampol personally. PM Yingluck will also be seen as being conciliatory only on the surface. If you think you have honour, prestige and manliness, others have theirs too.
