Thailand's democratic system was designed to be bicameral - with upper and lower houses to balance one another.
However, we seem to have a situation where some members of the Senate and lower House are joining forces to design some new laws to benefit themselves.
In principle, the upper House is tasked to provide the legislative experience necessary to control “unwise legislation”, while the lower House is generally composed of members elected on the basis of population.
In the US, the Senate was designed to be a stabilising force, elected not by the masses but selected by state legislators, while the House of Representatives’ members are elected directly by the population, in order for the system to function properly and not be led astray.
Hence, are Thais being unwittingly led away from democracy? Is this what we really want?
