Legal process was a set-up

Re: "Givers usually want something in return", Letters, June 5.

Songdej Praditsmanont kindly admonished me for defending the Dubai man. Please let me explain why I continue to defend Thaksin so that hopefully you and my dear friends Vint Chavala, Richard Bowler and James Gleason might understand me.
I don’t know Thaksin and have never see him in the flesh. I even hated him for using tax money to buy himself the “Air Force One” during his heyday. But you can’t deny that he was persecuted. He was convicted under irregular circumstances. The coup took his power and set up the Assets Scrutiny Committee, consisting of his enemies, to file charges against him. To justify the coup, he was submitted to a show trial with the guilty verdict pre-determined. And the court that convicted him is a special court for politicians, a one-court system with no appeal. I would have cheered his conviction had there been no coup and had he been prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office and tried by a three-tier court system.
Let’s do the right thing. Revoke Thaksin’s jail term, return his assets and give him new trials. This time follow the exact course of the law.
