CNN reported on December 9, 2012, that Western governments sent military contractors and Special Forces to Jordan and Turkey to train al-Qaeda “how to monitor and secure stocks [of chemical weapons]”.
In May a UN commission of inquiry confirmed that al-Qaeda, not the Syrian government, used sarin nerve gas against the civilian population. Commission member Carla Del Ponte said, “There are strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof of the use of sarin gas, from the way the victims were treated ... This was use on the part of the opposition, the rebels, not by the government authorities”. (Chicago Tribune, May 5)
Additionally, according to Turkey’s state media agency Zaman, the Turkish General Directorate of Security reported that Turkish police seized two kilos of sarin gas in the city of Adana. The sarin was in the possession of al-Qaeda forces believed to be heading for Syria.
These events came shortly after Obama warned Syria about crossing a “red line” if it used chemical weapons. Now, following another red-line warning, we witness another chemical attack in a Damascus suburb.
Have we all forgotten the lies used to justify war in Vietnam (Tonkin Gulf incident), about WMD in Iraq, about massacres and mass rapes in Libya, and about ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia?
In spite of being at war with al-Qaeda, the Obama administration has chosen to train, arm, fund and recruit for al-Qaeda, first in Libya and now in Syria. How is it possible to be in an alliance with those you are at war with?
Martin Luther King Jr said in a 1967 speech, “America is the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today.” The only change since then is that America’s violence is more out of control than ever before.
It seems America is afraid that the UN report will not convict the Syrian government. Thus the rush to satisfy an addiction to war. I didn’t think I would see the day when Russia would be the voice of sanity and my country so obviously insane.
