Hugh Walford said Thaksin was convicted by a properly established court of law, which is true. But why the coup before the conviction?
Hugh, suppose that, while you were away, a group of “good citizens” seized your home and declared that you were up to no good. Next day they went on TV and proudly exhibited what they had found in your house: heroin, billions of baht in cash, dead bodies and assault weapons. This planted evidence was shown to the properly established court of law and you were convicted of every crime in the book. Would you run or would you acquiesce and go to jail?
I’m not saying Thaksin was wrongly convicted, but if the coup leaders could tear up the Constitution and oust the government at a snap of the fingers, obtaining Thaksin’s conviction was a piece of cake.
