Cooking up a storm

Enamelled kitchen and tableware comes to town at a new shop in Chatuchak Plaza

FUNCTIONAL, long-lasting and attractive enough to move direct from stove to table, enamel kitchenware has long been a favourite of anyone with a love for the past.
Interior designer Wilasinee Silaphiratphong loves it so much that she’s sharing her passion with other Thai cooks by opening a shop that’s stacked with enamelware in flamboyant colours and designs.
“I love making desserts and I was always looking for new and innovative props to use in my job. Every time I went abroad, I would wander around markets and stores in search of quality enamelled tableware in eye-catching designs. Last year, I finally had enough to open my Vila Homeware & Decoration store here at Chatuchak Plaza,” Wilasinee says.
Whether you’re a keen chef or just an occasional cook, you’ll love the variety of goodies in stock at Vila. There’s everything from saucepans, milk pans and frying pans to teapots, coffee-pots, mugs and trays.
Wilasinee offers three main themes. The polka dot collection, she says, appeals mainly to the young professionals while the vintage designs in plain, earth-toned shades are popular with chefs and housewives.
Families with children, meanwhile, can’t resist snapping up the kitchenware covered in such cartoon figures as Snoopy, My Melody and Miffy.

“Enamelled utensils are great generators of heat and keep food warm for long time. They are perfect for cooking stews, as they keep the heat stable. They can be used with all kinds of stoves but you shouldn’t use them for warming up food in a microwave,” Wilasinee says.
She also stocks a range of other kitchen and bathroom accessories including wooden trays, salt and pepper shakers, spoons and ladles along with ceramic enamelled canisters, vases and toothbrush holders. The kids will love the hand towels and there are snack boxes too that will look good in every satchel.
