The art of dressing

At Vintage Corner, you can step out proudly in the fashions of the past

GOING TO a fancy dress party or just enjoy dressing up in old-fashioned glad rags? Either way, you’ll probably find inspiration at Vintage Corner, a friendly downtown boutique that’s simply bursting with outfits, bridal dresses, costume jewellery and other accessories made somewhere between the 1920s and the ’90s.
The store’s the brainchild of Sayrung Prajit, herself a fervent collector of classic designs. A former tour agency operator, she opened Vintage Corner four years ago on the ground floor of Lido Theatre mainly, she says, to clear space in her closet.
“In fact, I’d wanted to open my own boutique for quite a while. I’ve always spent my weekends wandering around Chatuchak Weekend Market, which is a real paradise for anyone passionate in vintage fashion and antiques. For the first six months, I was only selling stuffs from my closet and was amazed at how fast everything went. I guess people appreciated my style.” Sayrung says.
To ensure her products are both rare and good quality, Sayrung only deals with veteran suppliers, many of whom buy their products from the Rong Kluea Market on the Cambodian border and in Hat Yai.
The boutique offers a range of ’20s Gatsby flapper dresses in several designs, tulip-shaped skirts from the ‘50s, midi blouses and glossy embroidered disco-style dresses from the ’60s, 1970’s floral shirts with big collars and oversized blazers from the 1980s of the kind Madonna used to wear.

There are also several elegant wedding dresses from Japan, America and the UK, most of them made from silk and silk chiffon and in both ivory and white.
“Vintage apparel is full of detail and is usually stitched by hand. China used to be famous for neat hand-embroidered lace, India was known for its glossy embroidered cloth, South Korea offered attractive printed fabrics and Japanese accessories and outfits had the best cut,” Sayrung says.
Vintage Corner also stocks costume jewellery including earrings, necklaces and pins, along with hats, bags, clutches and knitted belts and bead neckties.
“Prices start at Bt1,000. That’s a bit more expensive than at the market but that’s because I have everything laundered and cleaned before putting it up for sale,” Sayrung says.
