Pathum Thani organises its first triathlon next weekend. Have you signed yet?

WIDELY RECOGNISED as the education and technology hub of Thailand, Pathum Thani Province is celebrating its bicentennial by organising its first-ever international triathlon on May 10 and dedicating the high-level sports event to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on the occasion of her 60th birthday.
“This will be Pathum Thani’s first triathlon,” Governor Pongsatorn Sajjacholpan told reporters during the recent press conference at Future Park Rangsit, which was co-hosted by Rangsit Plaza’s chief executive Pimpaka Wanglee, race director Mukphol Amornvej and triathlon athletes Sam Chotiban and Saranon Chantaraj.
“We expect the triathlon to be held every year from now on and will encourage people to sign up and test their strength. The event does require stamina and training but we think it will be a great stage for everyone to develop their endurance and skills,” he added.
This upcoming event consists of a triathlon for men, women and teams and a duathlon for men and women. The 42.5-kilometre triathlon comprises 1.5km of swimming, 33km of cycling and an 8km run. Each age group is divided into male and female categories. The men’s category has five groups: 18-29 years old, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 up. For women, it is divided into 18-29 years and 30 years up. Teams should be made up of three individuals of either gender over the age of 18. The Duathlon for men is broken up into four groups – 18-29 years old, 30-39, 40-49 and 50 years up while the categories for the women are the same as for the triathlon.
The winners in each category will receive the Princess trophy and Bt300,000 prize money.
Pathum Thani, which borders Bangkok, is situated on the Chao Phraya basin and home to canals and orange plantations. Its original name was Mueang Sam Khok, and it was founded during the Ayutthaya era. The area was originally a settlement for the Mon people who migrated from Mohtama (in Myanmar) more than 350 years ago. Because of its historical importance, Pathum Thani features a number of important Buddhist temples, and is also the location of a number of entertainment venues, including museums and an amusement park.
