Stephff’s cartoon of September 7 seems to have offended Willem van Gogh with its depiction of a snarling EU “shark” shooing away the mammoth inflow of immigrants. It depicted a one-sided view of the actions taken to stem that flow by southern EU countries such as Hungary and Greece.
While the widely reported scenes of inhumanity at the entrance to the EU were elegantly encapsulated in Stephff’s cartoon, it failed to reflect the show of compassion from northern EU members, especially Germany. Germany’s actions and the words of its leader displayed a “Christian” kindness that uplifted standards of humane behaviour. Perhaps Stephff could come up with another cartoon depicting a parallel scene of humans at their best.
Mr Van Gogh ponders whether The Nation should sever its relationship with Stephff. If it did so, I’m sure that its competitor would welcome him with open arms and congratulate themselves on their luck.
