A vegetarian world would lead to starvation

Re: "Meat is causing food shortages not solving it", Letters, November 11.

I certainly cannot debate JC Wilcox’s declaration that 10 acres of land will feed 25 vegans but only one meat-eater. Facts like that can be neither proved nor disproved – which is why vegetarians use them. JC, you and Eric Bahrt can be vegans or vegetarians because the vast majority of people on Earth are not. That is why there is always a ready supply of vegetables for you.
Cattle eat grass. Grass can be grown almost anywhere, as opposed to soybeans, corn, etc. Pigs eat garbage, goats eat anything and chicken feed is very inexpensive and easy to produce.
The fact is that neither of us can prove our various points. But I would be willing to bet that, if you got your way and the world ceased eating meat and fish, in six months to a year, you and Eric would be the first ones eyeing your next-door neighbour and licking your chops.
In reality, people will continue to eat meat, and about all you will have accomplished is to make those who do not understand the realities of life feel guilty.
