Teachers must be held accountable

The 13,000 teachers who have defaulted on Government Savings Bank loans are seeking to escape being sued.

Many claim they didn’t know that signing up for a loan meant they could be forced to sell assets to repay it. But teachers must be role models for their students, including on accountability. How could they sign contracts without understanding them? They must now accept the consequences, and if that affects their teaching, then their evaluations should suffer.
For their part, the GSB and other banks should review their loan contracts to ensure that non-lawyers can understand them. But, in the interim, what both parties voluntarily agreed to must stand.
