Explosive sound for movie buffs

LG has a curved sound bar that brings the noise home. Add a little extra and bring the cops to your door

IF YOU’VE GOT a curved TV set – say, the 65-inch EG960T from LG – you really ought to have the Curved Sound Bar LAS855M, another beauty from the same firm.
The LAS855M has both ends turned outward and looks fantastic under a curved OLED or LED TV, whether on a stand or on the wall.
The main unit of the sound bar is quite compact at just 1200x43x82mm, while the wireless subwoofer is 171x390x261mm.
The sound can get very loud – think of a thunderstorm directly overhead. The 4.1-channel system has total power output of 360 watts. That’s 60 watts times two for the front channels, 20 x 2 for the surround channels and 200 for the subwoofer.
The sound bar is easy to set up. The wireless subwoofer automatically connects to the main unit when you plug in the power cable and switch on the main unit. You can place the subwoofer anywhere in the room.
I connected the optical output of my TrueVisions satellite receiver to that of the sound bar so I could get HD movies in Digital Dolby Plus. The bar can be synchronised with any LT TV, either wirelessly or with an optical cable. HDMI pass-through lets you link to a Bluray player or HD movie player as well.
The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections are built in and, with the LAN port, this rig can be a part of an LG multi-room Music Flow system.
I hooked a LAN cable to my router and played music from a mobile phone and from my desktop computer using the specific Music Flow apps.
The tunes sounded great, with the subwoofer rendering delicious bass, making the system ideal for rock music. The sound bar will also play high-resolution FLAC 24bit/192kHz audio files.
While watching action movies via the TrueVisions satellite receiver, every explosion sounds so realistic that you worry someone’s going to call the cops. The floor quite literally shakes.
What was missing, however, was that all-enveloping surround sound, apparently because my living is “too large”. LG says you’ll get that kind of effect best in bedrooms and other smaller rooms.
The solution, for us “spacious livers”, is to hook up two more LG Music Flow speakers to the sound bar, placing them behind you, and use Home Cinema Mode. Then the neighbours really will call the cops.
The LG Curved Sound Bar LAS855M retails for Bt19,990.
