The Thai-language press reported the news of Thaksin Shinawatra delivering a speech in New York on Wednesday with a picture of demonstrators holding posters criticising him at the meeting venue.
It shows many Thais think Thaksin has no right to damage Thailand’s image, since he is part of the country’s problems. Thaksin should say why he has left Thailand’s education unattended for 13 years. Isn’t education the first thing a serious leader must look at in order to develop his country?
Instead, Thaksin used Thai teachers as his base of power and a draw for votes for his political party.
He raised teachers’ salaries several times without reason. He allowed teachers to draw money from their retirement and funeral funds to spend – so he could boast how fast he had managed a turnaround for the flagging economy.
It was Thaksin who has added to Thailand’s education woes today.
