Watching Asian docos made me realise how lucky we are

Having lately been a hermit, albeit amongst lavish surroundings, I have luckily been forced to view via TV many real-time documentaries about Asia (home to half the world’s population). And I was reminded of how fortunate most of the people I know, includ

Millions of children don’t have enough food, drinking water and medical attention, not to mention no telephone, TV or any form of transportation, exclusive of shoeless feet.
They have no Disney, cinema and often no one to say goodnight to them and give them a hug. School is a dream and when they are fortunate enough to have one, are they willing to rise at 5am and walk several miles to reach it? No wonder Asian students are a threat compared to other children considering their desire to learn.
In a few nations the suicide rate is highest among students who fail to get into a desired school! What then is the future of most children when a bowl of rice is a gift?
Some children, as young as four and five, are already helping their parents produce enough of anything to have food tomorrow.
Today I saw a fisherman say, “Oh no, we can’t afford to eat the fish we caught – we have to sell it to survive.” And then he prepared for a six-mile walk to the market! His family of five appeared to weigh a combined total of 50 kilograms. No obesity problem there, or in many other places.
Yes, others suffer as well but many due to self-generated ills. They are able, but not willing to step up to the plate. Starting today my values have been rearranged.
