Varatchaya has a tricky doubles match @ Australian Open

Doubles specialist Varatchaya Wongteanchai has a tricky first round match in the Australian Open as she and China’s Wang Qian face two-time Grand Slam winners Vania King of the US and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan.

The country’s No 3 was a last minute signin with the 2014 Asian Games singles gold medallist. The Chinese’s original partner Elise Merterns of the Netherlands decided to team with another player.

Varatchaya will compete in her second Major after the 2016 US Open where she and Zhaoxuan Yang lost in the first round.

“We just decided to play together after she confirmed through email shortly before the draw. But we haven’t practiced together yet as she has to focus on her singles match on Tuesday first,” said the 27-year-old player.

Although the chance to beat the 2010 Wimbledon and US Open champions looks slim, Varatchaya hopes to put on a giant killer’s role and make the match difficult for her opponents.

“I had beaten Shvedova in the Fed Cup but then we had different partners. I have nothing to lose at this point. I hope we will have a good day,” the two-time WTA doubles winner said. Their match will be either on Wednesday or Thursday.
