While impressive, the “Uber-like” online translation service being pioneered in Singapore will very soon be obsolete.
Very shortly, virtually all human translators, spoken-language schools, university language classes, battlefield translators, tour guide translators and barstool language wizards will be gone. The asteroid to these dinosaurs is the so-called METME Big Algorithm, discovered in 1984 and now set to be introduced as a new item on your smartphone. METME (Maximum Efficient Transfer of Modulated Energy) is now known as the IoT (Internet of Things).
METME effectively multiplies the “old” telephone line by reconstituting what are termed “out of band harmonics” to create thousands of more coherent data lines. A useful analogy for this change is a nearly deaf person being handed a hearing aid and suddenly being able to hear everything in the greatest detail. Likewise, the METME application vastly increases the out-of-band harmonics lost with the “old” electricity. The article also mentioned the Singapore firm’s plan to translate even African languages. The METME app will go further and be capable of translating even heavily accented Scots. Things are changing very rapidly.
