Since nobody else is singing the praises of German Chancellor Angela Merkel for opening Germany’s borders to countless masses of refugees from Islamic countries, I’ll do it.
In practical terms, Mrs Merkel’s generous act is unbelievably foolhardy. It may amount to Germany’s suicide as a Christian country devoted to Western values. Other countries have closed their borders, and with good reason. Any nation that welcomes so many refugees from Islamic countries runs the risk of being overrun: not only by their numbers, but by the Islamisation and acts of terror that are bound to follow.
But in moral terms, her act is unbelievably courageous and altruistic. It marks her as the last Christian standing on the stage of world politics. It is a perfect illustration of a Biblical verse, Hosea 6:6, which Jesus quotes at least twice, in Matthew 9:13 and 12:7: “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.” It is also a shining example of a paramount Buddhist virtue, compassion.
Earthly powers may mock her, but Heaven will surely smile on Merkel even if Earth doesn’t. For anybody who asks the question, “What would Jesus or the Buddha do?” the answer is clear: This.
