American democracy being murdered … or nurtured?

Re: “Is American democracy dying in front of our eyes”: Have Your Say, yesterday.

Vint Chavala is right to question the health of democracy in the US in particular and the free world in general. Even before January 20, the country had been exposed to Trump’s own brand of entropy, a condition of escalating chaos and disorder that continues to disfigure the face of participatory politics, and sets an extremely poor example for the rest of the world to follow.
Conversely, on the same page we have JC Wilcox’s perfunctory dystopian paranoia, suggesting that democracy is imperilled by an insidious Islamic agenda, intent on forcing the “whole of Western civilisation” to go down the pan. He further compounds this foolhardiness by actually saying that Trump stands fast against this rising tide of apparent pernicious Islamofascism, and that he “stands alone in closing the house door”. According to Wilcox, he is attacked for doing so.
Let’s now engage our minds with the truth, however unpalatable; in the real world, Trump invites criticism for a growing number of shocking misdemeanours, for example openly bragging about “grabbing” women’s genitalia without their consent, and vilifying and traducing a gold-star Muslim family whose son died in a combat zone while wearing his country’s uniform. This, need we be reminded, was sicked up by a man who managed to avoid serving his country, unlike the brave Captain Humayun Khan. How can we expect anything else from a narcissistic sociopath – one who is also, allegedly, a foreign despot’s lackey.
Wilcox has nailed his colours to Trump’s mast. I prefer the decency and common sense of the overwhelming majority of Americans.
