The king and the naga
Cambodia’s first gay dance company Prumsodun Ok & Natyarasa, which restages Khmer classical dances with a vital freshness, will be in Thailand this month for the Bangkok Theatre Festival Asian Focus, which runs at Thong Lor Art Space from May 26 to June 4. The troupe will perform “Beloved”, a story inspired by an Angkorian custom recorded in the thirteenth century – in which the Khmer king organised nightly sexual unions with a naga to ensure fertility of the land. The performance will be staged on June 2-4 at 8pm. For tickets and more information, visit www.BangkokTheatreFestival.org.

Still waters run deep
Another festival programme is “Open Waters”, an original work for the theatre created through collaboration between Singaporean artist Tan Shou Chen and Bangkok artist Jaturachai Srichanwanpen. Water, both life-giving and life-taking, is a recurrent trope in Singapore and Thailand culture. You can see it at at Thong Lor Art Space from May 26 to 28.
