“See Phaendin” set for a stage comeback

Scenario’s revival of the longest-running Thai musical “See Phaendin” (“Four Reigns”) takes to the stage of the Ratchadalai Theatre form August 11 to 28.

Actress Sinjai Plengpanich will reprise her role as the adult Mae Ploy and Kriangkai Unhanan plays Khun Prem. Naphat “Gun the Star” Injaiuea stars as the young Khun Prem, while Mae Ploy’s son Aon will be portrayed by Arnuttaphol “R the Star” Sirichumsang. Rudklao Amratisha plays Mae Ploy’s best friend Mae Choi. The rest of the cast has yet to be announced.

“Four Reigns”, the much-loved novel by the late statesman MR Kukrit Pramoj, was first brought to the stage by Scenario’s Takonkiet Viravan in 2011 and has been adapted for the small screen five times over the last four decades. The daughter of an aristocrat, Mae Ploy grew up in the royal court before getting married and raising her children. Her life is set against a backdrop of social and political change, with Siam moving from the reign of King Rama V to the revolution in 1932 and onwards to World War II. While on the surface, the novel is about Mae Ploy as she transitions from daughter to wife and mother, it is also a portrayal of Thai society at a crucial time based on Kukrit’s own background and told from his point of view.

“Si Phaendin: The Musical” will runs every Thursday to Sunday until August 27 at the Muangthai Rachadalai Theatre at 7.30 and 1.30pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets cost from Bt500 to Bt3,000 at Thai Ticket Major.
