Copious accounts of gorillas using tools, elephants’ memories and their family structures, octopi having the intelligence of children and all animals trembling when they sense, hear, smell and witness death in slaughterhouses. The list is endless, of course. I agree with Egon that “The evidence from videos available on the Internet is of such extent that the torture of animals before the actual killing is done is undeniable and a reason not to eat meat.”
Vegetarianism is not the total answer and does not take into account the cruelty to young living animals in the dairy industry. Dairy cows are artificially inseminated and milked while pregnant, their babies are routinely taken from them at birth and their milk drained from them in volumes way beyond that which is naturally needed for their calves. It is a fact that the “catastrophic” increase in the human population makes eating the Western diet of animal products unsustainable. The obvious answer is to consume a healthy, well-balanced plant based diet.
