I am writing this from Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok.
Why am I here? Well, as is my wont at breakfast time I was reading The Nation, and happened upon Nigel Pike’s latest limp-wristed attempt at common sense and gravitas, and fell off my chair amid peals of laughter. Result? A bruised humerus. (Yep, pun intended.) My consultant asked me why I found myself in hospital, and I pointed out the Letters page in question. He is now in A & E with a cracked jaw.
Specifically, Nigel Pike’s Janus-type posture, like his dirty washing, is again tiresomely displayed for all to see. Iain Cowie, among other right-thinking folks who write here, correctly takes Nigel to task for the usual misleading and highly subjective hot air, and confused politico-literary pareidolia. One has also to remember that while Nigel derides what he doubtless calls insidious teachings, he at the same time proudly boasts of hating democracy. Pick your own word to describe this.
As for his use of a strong word like hate, I for my part would rarely, if ever, apply it to anything less than significant.
Whatever one’s views on all of this, the Frankfurt School will be cited long after Pike’s fatuous bluster has been interred with his bones. (With apologies to Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.)
Oh, one more thing – about your tutu: you can have it back Nigel, it’s several sizes too big for me and purple’s not my colour.
