What gives humans the right to mercilessly kill, exploit fellow animals?

Re: “Greatest protection against heart disease is just a click away”, Have Your Say, January 29.

We shouldn’t need to compare the heart health of meat eaters with that of non-meat eaters, because killing other sentient, intelligent life-loving individuals for food should be deemed ethically wrong.
What if cannibals were found to have stronger hearts than those who didn’t eat humans? Would we endorse the eating of humans? Of course we wouldn’t, because we recognise that, regardless of the benefits to our own health, killing our fellow humans is wrong. And the same applies to the billions of animals whose lives we so casually snuff out every year in the name of food.
Humans are not “special” animals. They are smarter in many ways, but that doesn’t make them superior to the others and it certainly doesn’t mean they have a right to mercilessly kill and exploit them.
