Abhisit right to resign – but Democrats right to block Shinawatras

Abhisit right to resign – but Democrats right to block Shinawatras

Re: “Abhisit quits as MP after Democrats join hands with junta”, Politics, June 6.

Former Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva did the right thing when he resigned as an MP after his party decided to join the Prayut Chan-o-cha government. He had been campaigning against that eventuality since before the March 24 election, when he was party leader.
However, the Democrat Party has also done the right thing in joining the government, since this is the only way to keep the country from falling under the sway of Thaksin Shinawatra once again.
Given his long and valuable experience, Abhisit should consider returning to politics in the future. That time should be sooner rather than later, given that the new government is not expected to last long.
A few years ago I read Abhisit’s book – “The Simple Truth: Personal Untold Accounts of Thailand’s 2009-2010 Political Crises” – and gained a lot of information and knowledge about the situation at that time.
If Abhisit were to write another book about his political life, I am sure it would provide new and unprecedented insights into politics. I urge him to consider picking up the pen.
