Language schools to pave way for Asean community
The Basic Education Commission has opened 114 language centres with a budget of Bt9.57 million to prepare Thailand for the imminent Asean Economic Community.
Secretary Kamol Rodklai said yesterday the centres would teach second languages – Chinese, Korean, German, French and Spanish – and four Asean languages – Myanmar (Burmese), Vietnamese, Khmer and Malayu. They would provide more opportunities for people to be competitive, he said.
The budget for the Chinese education centre is Bt3.41 million, Bt2.50 million for the Japanese, Bt1.75 million for the French, Bt420,000 for the German, Bt80,000 for the Spanish and Bt540,000 for the Korean.
The five Asean education centres would get Bt880,000 each.
