Bangkok rally marks anniversary of 1932 democratic revolution

Two groups gathered in Bangkok today (June 24) to mark the 88th anniversary of the Siamese Revolution.

The Democracy Restoration Group and Resistant Citizen groups rallied at Democracy Monument to commemorate the 1932 bloodless revolt, which ended absolute monarchy and ushered in democracy under constitutional monarchy.
The groups marched to the area at 5am and began projecting footage of Thai political events on a makeshift giant screen and via hologram images. Police intervened and warned the activists not to project holograms on or close to the road. The groups then moved to another spot so that the press could join them.
The footage depicted the story of the People's Party, or Khana Ratsadon, which led the 1932 uprising. Khana Ratsadon leader Phraya Phahonphonphayuhasena was depicted reading the Declaration of the New Siamese State to end absolute monarchy and establish a constitutional state.
Activists protested that the current Constitution, drafted by the military government following the 2014 coup, had violated Thailand’s true democratic foundations and needed to be changed.
The groups said they had no intention of undermining any Thai institution but they believed it was the duty of Thai citizens to highlight the importance of democracy and the defects that remained under the present system of governance.
