Immigration police in Lampang province on Thursday (July 30) arrested seven Myanmar nationals for entering the country illegally and a Thai man for bringing them in.

“Officers from the Wiangmok Police Station in Thoen district stopped a suspicious looking pick-up truck at the Saliamwan checkpoint on Thursday morning,” said Lampang Immigration Police chief Pol Lt-Colonel Suriya Chainan. “While searching the vehicle, officers found seven Myanmar nationals hiding on board. They had entered the country without any documents or passing the border checkpoint’s screening procedure.”

One suspect reportedly told police they had entered Thailand via the border in Tak province before heading to Lampang to find jobs. The seven Myanmar nationals and the Thai driver were charged and sent to Wiangmok Police Station for legal action.
“This raid is part of a policy implemented by national Immigration Police chief Pol Lt-General Sompong Chingduang to prevent foreigners from entering Thailand without undergoing mandatory screening at border checkpoints, as they might bring Covid-19 into Thailand,” Suriyan said. “If you have information of illegal aliens in the country, call Immigration Police hotline 1178.”
