Thailand floods hit 1.64m rai of cropland and leave 3.9m farm animals dead or missing

Rice accounts for most of Thailand’s flood-hit cropland, while surveys record over 3.9 million farm animals dead or missing, mainly poultry

  • As of October 2, flooding in 42 Thai provinces has affected over 1.64 million rai of cropland, impacting 144,738 farmers.
  • Rice fields were the most impacted, accounting for over 1.31 million rai of the total affected cropland area.
  • Beyond cropland, the agricultural sector suffered major losses with over 3.9 million livestock reported dead or missing, primarily poultry.
  • The aquaculture industry was also hit, with damage to fish and shrimp farms valued at over 170 million baht.

Flooding has affected more than 1.64 million rai of cropland in 42 Thai provinces, while livestock surveys have recorded over 3.9 million animals dead or missing, according to Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives figures as of 3pm on October 2, 2026.

The ministry’s agricultural disaster monitoring and response centre compiled the figures for flooding since August 21. Its October 2 situation report distinguishes areas affected by flooding from damage identified through surveys.

The flood impact on Thailand’s agricultural sector spans crop cultivation, aquaculture and livestock, with rice accounting for the largest affected crop area.

Rice dominates the 1.64 million rai of affected cropland

Flooding affected 144,738 crop farmers and 1,644,172 rai of cultivated land, equivalent to 263,067.52 hectares. The ministry recorded the affected area as:

- Rice: 1,318,046 rai, or 210,887.36 hectares
- Field crops and vegetables: 239,976 rai, or 38,396.16 hectares
- Fruit trees, perennial crops and other cultivation: 86,151 rai, or 13,784.16 hectares

Completed surveys recorded crop damage affecting 988 farmers and a stated total of 6,798 rai, or 1,087.68 hectares, valued at 15,715,883 baht.

The surveyed damage comprised 6,517 rai of rice, 218 rai of field crops and vegetables, and 62 rai of fruit trees, perennial crops and other cultivation.

Fisheries damage valued at 170.14 million baht

Flooding affected 5,012 aquaculture farmers in 24 provinces. The ministry listed 41,335 rai, equivalent to 6,613.6 hectares, under both affected aquaculture areas and surveyed damage, with losses valued at 170,135,717 baht.

However, the ministry’s detailed fisheries figures are inconsistent. The affected-area entry lists fish ponds covering 3,419 rai, shrimp ponds covering 4,916 rai and cages occupying 11,850 square metres. The two pond categories total 8,335 rai, below the stated overall area.

The surveyed-damage entry lists the same 5,012 farmers, with 33,419 rai of fish ponds and 7,916 rai of shrimp ponds, totalling 41,335 rai. It separately records damaged cages covering 41,335 square metres.

The report does not explain why the surveyed pond and cage damage exceeds the corresponding affected-area figures.

Poultry accounts for most animals dead or missing

Flooding affected 14,359 livestock farmers in 26 provinces and a total of 12,574,982 animals. Within that wider affected population, surveys recorded losses among 48 farmers, with 3,903,831 animals dead or missing.

The ministry’s livestock breakdown was:

- Cattle: 40,777 affected; 3,423 dead or missing.
- Buffaloes: 10,291 affected; two dead or missing.
- Pigs: 65,472 affected; 9,028 dead or missing.
- Goats and sheep: 15,555 affected; five dead or missing.
- Poultry: 12,442,887 affected; 3,891,373 dead or missing.

Flooding also affected 1,715 rai, or 274.4 hectares, of pasture used for animal feed.
