The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued its eighth warning at 5am on October 5, 2026, forecasting thundershowers, gusty winds and isolated heavy to very heavy rain in upper Thailand during October 5–7. Heavy and accumulated rainfall could trigger flash floods and sudden run-off, particularly near foothills and in low-lying areas
TMD sets out regional risks for October 5–7
The TMD’s warning, reference 242/2569, identifies the affected regions in two stages:
- October 5–6: The North, Central region including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, the East and upper South face unsettled weather. Rainfall in the Northeast is expected to decrease.
- October 7: The affected areas are the western parts of the North and Central region.
The TMD attributed the unsettled weather late in the rainy season to a high-pressure system, or cold air mass, from China extending over the North and upper Northeast, triggering thundershowers initially. The southwest monsoon continues to prevail over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand.
TMD warns of flood hazards and waves above 2 metres
The TMD urged people to watch for flash floods and sudden run-off on foothill slopes near waterways and in low-lying areas. Accumulated rainfall could also leave standing floodwater in low-lying locations.
The TMD advised people to avoid open spaces, sheltering beneath large trees and standing near unstable advertising signs during thundershowers and gusty winds.
The TMD also forecast stronger winds and waves in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, with waves exceeding 2 metres in thundershowers. Mariners should check their routes, navigate cautiously and avoid sailing through thundershowers.
More rain forecast for October 9–13
The TMD forecasts increasing rainfall during October 9–13 in the East, Central region including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, and the South. Isolated heavy to very heavy rain is expected during this later period.
The TMD urged the public to follow forecasts and official warnings closely and plan daily activities and travel carefully to reduce risks during both periods.
The TMD provides weather updates around the clock through its website and telephone services on 02-399-4012, 02-399-4013 and 1182. The next warning was scheduled for 5pm on October 5.
