Deadly school shooting shocks southern Philippines as teen gunman kills two

A 16-year-old student was among three people killed after a shooting at a high school in the southern Philippines on Friday, with authorities confirming that eight others were wounded in the attack.

The shooting took place at a school in Banga, South Cotabato, where police said the teenage suspect opened fire before later taking his own life.

Local officials said the victims, aged between 14 and 17, included students caught up in the attack. Four of those injured were reported to be in critical condition.

Banga Mayor Albert Palencia said the shooting occurred after lunchtime, as authorities began investigating what prompted the teenager to carry out the attack.

The incident has renewed concerns over school safety and access to firearms in the Philippines, where authorities have repeatedly faced challenges involving gun violence.

South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo called on gun owners to ensure firearms were properly secured and kept away from minors.

The shooting marks the third fatal gun incident at a Philippine school since June, highlighting ongoing concerns over security measures in educational institutions across the country.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, including how the suspect obtained the firearm and what may have led to the shooting.
