Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão will make his first official visit to Bangkok since 2013 on 9–10 October, seeking closer economic and ASEAN ties.
Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul is preparing to host Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão for an official state visit to Bangkok from 9 to 10 October 2026.
The two-day summit marks the first official visit to Thailand by a Timorese Prime Minister in 13 years and serves as the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders since Dili joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Government Spokesperson Ekkapob Peanprasert announced on Monday (October 5) that the visit represents a pivotal moment in opening a "new chapter" of bilateral diplomacy, designed to convert long-standing goodwill into structured economic and institutional partnerships.
Bilateral talks at Government House on Friday, 9 October, will center on expanding trade, investment, and cross-border commercial opportunities.
Key priorities on the agenda include:
Agriculture and Food Security: Deepening trade in agricultural produce and establishing technical exchange programmes to bolster regional food supply chains.
Public Health and Human Capital: Enhancing capacity-building frameworks, medical training, and educational exchange initiatives between Thai and Timorese institutions.
Energy, Tourism, and Security: Exploring joint investment in sustainable tourism infrastructure and bilateral defence cooperation to safeguard maritime security.
The two leaders will formalise these initiatives by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a permanent Foreign Ministry-led bilateral consultation mechanism. The framework will oversee policy execution and track progress across economic and security sectors.
The summit comes as Timor-Leste consolidates its role within ASEAN following its integration into the regional bloc. The new bilateral consultation framework is expected to help integrate Dili into ASEAN’s economic agreements, trade networks, and regional security initiatives.
"This visit reflects the deep-rooted friendship between Thailand and Timor-Leste and marks a crucial step forward following Timor-Leste's accession to ASEAN," Ekkapob said. "Thailand remains fully committed to supporting Timor-Leste as we work together to generate economic opportunities, improve livelihoods, and reinforce ASEAN community cohesion."
Prime Minister Gusmão’s itinerary at Government House will include an official welcoming ceremony, bilateral talks, a joint press conference, and an official luncheon hosted in his honour.
