Four regions of Thailand remain under heavy rain as monsoon persists

An advisory from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) on strong winds and waves in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand, together with heavy to very heavy rain in Thailand, remains in effect until Sunday (August 9, 2026).

The TMD forecasts continued heavy rain in parts of the North, Northeast, Central and East as a monsoon trough stretches across the upper North and upper Laos, combined with a relatively strong south-west monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

The TMD advised people in the affected areas to be alert to heavy to very heavy rain and accumulated rainfall, which could trigger flash floods and rapid run-off, particularly in foothill areas near waterways and in low-lying areas.

Winds and waves in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand remain relatively strong, with waves of 2–3 metres and above 3 metres during thunderstorms.

Mariners should navigate carefully and avoid areas affected by thunderstorms, while small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf should remain ashore through Sunday.

Typhoon “Dolphin”, currently over the East China Sea, is forecast to make landfall in Zhejiang province, China, between August 9 and 10.

The storm will not enter Thailand.

Travellers heading to the area should check the weather before setting out.

North

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 70% of the region, with heavy rain in many areas of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Tak, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun.

• South-westerly winds: 10–20 km/h

Northeast

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the region, with heavy rain in parts of Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima and Ubon Ratchathani.
• Minimum temperature: 23–25°C
• Maximum temperature: 29–34°C
• South-westerly winds: 10–20 km/h

Central region

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the region, with heavy rain in parts of Lop Buri, Saraburi and Kanchanaburi.
• Minimum temperature: 23–26°C
• Maximum temperature: 33–36°C
• South-westerly winds: 10–25 km/h

East

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the region, with heavy rain in parts of Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chanthaburi and Trat.
• Minimum temperature: 24–27°C
• Maximum temperature: 30–34°C
• South-westerly winds: 20–40 km/h
• Wave height: 2–3 metres, exceeding 3 metres during thunderstorms

South (east coast)

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 30% of the region, mainly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani, Yala and Narathiwat.
• Minimum temperature: 23–26°C
• Maximum temperature: 32–36°C
• South-westerly winds: 20–35 km/h
• Wave height: 1–2 metres, exceeding 2 metres offshore and during thunderstorms

South (west coast)

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 30% of the region, mainly in Ranong, Phang Nga, Trang and Satun.
• Minimum temperature: 24–27°C
• Maximum temperature: 31–35°C
• From Phuket northwards: South-westerly winds of 20–40 km/h, with waves of 2–3 metres and above 3 metres during thunderstorms
• From Krabi southwards: South-westerly winds of 20–35 km/h, with waves about 2 metres high and above 2 metres during thunderstorms

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the area.
• Minimum temperature: 25–27°C
• Maximum temperature: 33–35°C
• South-westerly winds: 10–25 km/h
